PATNA: Hundreds of people — one estimate said 2,000 — staged a sit-in at the city's Kargil Chowk, extending support to yoga guru Baba Ramdev who launched his indefinite fast against corruption and black money in New Delhi on Saturday.
They included students, self-employed individuals, retired government servants and housewives. At least 100 of them, all members of Patanjali Yoga Committee (PYC)'s Patna division, sat on hunger strike. "We will continue our fast till the demands of Baba are met," PYC's Ajay Kumar said.
One of the protesters, Suchit Kumar, is preparing for banking exams. "Our system has rotten so badly that government servants do not work without
taking bribe," he said and added that Baba's stir would benefit the common people.
Meera Devi of Danapur, who teaches yoga, said crime is increasing and no one is safe. "Checking corruption is a must for checking crime," she said.
Geeta Devi, also of Danapur, said Baba is not alone and the entire nation would support him till the end. "We Indians are suffering because the government has been sleeping. The government has to act this time," she said.
Dr Surendra Kumar echoed her. He said people are getting away with crime and corruption. "This must end. If the system cannot stop it, let the system change," he said.
Patna high court advocate Krishna Bihari said Baba Ramdev should continue his fight to the finish "from outside". For, if he joins politics, he may end up becoming a part of this corrupt system, he feared.
