Kolkata At least 40,000 followers of Baba Ramdev, who are members of the Bengal unit of Bharat Swabhiman Trust, will join him in his protest against black money and corruption in Delhi by staging the hunger strike in Kolkata and several other districts in the state.
At a time, when around 3,500 of Baba’s followers from the state have already left the state and joined the other followers in Delhi, around 3000 of his followers will observe fast from 5 am on
Saturday at Metro Channel in Kolkata. After 5 pm, the protesters will be shifted to a different venue at Mohammad Ali Park in North Kolkata as the Kolkata Police did not give them permission for the fast at Metro Channel for more than 12 hours. Besides, a mass hunger strike supporting Baba has been planned in all the districts of the state.
A Swabhiman team had also met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her residence at Kalighat on Wednesday to present a formal invitation to her in the fast programme, said Uttal Saha, president of the Bengal unit of the team. “The CM has told us that we would not face any problem from the administration and that she is with us as we are fighting for a noble cause,” said Saha.
Significantly, around 500 organisations in the state have extended their support to the Bharat Swabhiman. Shahi Imams of the twoTipu Sultan Mosques in the city have also decided to join the organisation in the fast. “We have support from RSS, Bharat Sevasram, Vihswa Hindu Parishad and also from the Islamic orga nisations. Two of the Shahi Imams of the city will also join us,” said Saha.
In Bengal, 23 units of the Bharat Swabhiman has around 50 lakh members, said Saha.
“We have have decided the venue for the hunger strike in all the districts. All of us will start fasting when Baba starts and will end fasting when Baba ends it,” said Aswini Kumar Jaiswal, the secretary of Bharat Swabhiman unit in North 24 Pargana district.
Nearly 5,000 members of Taxi and Auto Union of the city and thousands of farmers and labourers from several districts in the state have extended their support to Baba’s hunger strike.
Adwaitya Dutta, RSS chief of Bengal Unit, said, “We have been ordered by our central leadership to join the programme. We will be present there but without our banner.”
